  Best Codec for AVCHD

  I’m hoping the experience of some here will guide me through a minefield.
  A client has filmed a travelogue in Africa on AVCHD and wants to do preliminary edits on Elements, supplied with his top of the range VIO, before I do the final edit and subsequently produce master DVD’s.

  I have only worked (reluctantly) on AVCHD once before and as an Edius user converted to Canopus HQ for smooth playback. I’m not convinced that Elements is up to the job nor that his external USB 2 drive will provide sustained speed.

  What Codec/workflow would you recommend. Is this a lost cause before his laptop is even switched on?
