Crashy McFreeze-alot
Not to be confused with the little-known 80’s rapper, the subject line describes my CS3 project.
Some months ago I started this project, and it progressively became less and less stable. Once I had my first edit, I did a project manage to reduce the footprint from 100 gigs down to maybe 30.
My sequence has maybe 100 cuts, 20 or so titles, some music – nothing too fancy.
I got to the point where I set the auto-save to 1 min because it would crash “A serious error has occurred” without warning just from moving a clip on the timeline, double clicking a title, or even adjusting the preferences.
Today I started working on the project again with frequent crashes when dealing with one title. I deleted the title, seems a bit better, but still crashes periodically for no reason.
I started a new project and imported the old project, which is known to fix corrupt projects. But still we have some crashes when doing normal tasks like moving or trimming clips.
I next moved the project to a different computer, but same random crashes.
My only other theory is the drive may be fragmented, which certainly can cause problems. Is it wise to defrag a media drive?
This is a 1TB SATA drive with about 200gigs free.XP Pro – 2 gig ram – Core 2 Duo.
Any ideas. I know it is a bit vague. None of my other projects crash like this.

Do you run with the Performance tab in the task manager open to check the size of the page file?
Also…what happens if you save a copy and deep-six all the titles?
Does the copy with no titles perform better?

page file stays around 1.5gig
copied project to a clean drive (media) and project file to another drive. Still crashed.
Let me try without the titles. -
to clarify – the error I am getting is a Project Save Error – An unknown error occurred while saving the project. Select Save As from the File menu… But when I try save as, I get the same error.

Tim – I saved a copy of the project, deleted all the titles, after first exporting them all. Did a few simple cuts, and got a Serious Errors has occurred.
Of course it is on a project that is almost done, but that’s Murphy’s Law.Mike
PF still in the 1.5 – 1.8gig range
After the most recent crash, opened the project again and now get Adobe Premiere is running very low on System Memory. Please save your project and proceed with caution.

project worked pretty well without the titles, aside from the project save error and the low memory.
I increased the PF sizes, and it worked well with no crashes.
So I went back to the original project with titles. Even this was working pretty well, however eventually it gave me a Serious Error has Occurred, and the program closed. -
I was about to report back that switching to my Dell laptop, which is normally very stable, the problem project was working better. Indeed it was working better until I got a Serious error has occurred – which I never get on this machine.
So the problem is clearly something about the project.
Next I deleted almost all of the titles from this seemingly stable project. It actually worked pretty well, until a serious problem occurred.
So now having tried three different computers, I am puzzled.
Sorry for all the posts.
The is the only project with these problems – all other premiere projects work pretty well. Not sure what it is about this project, but I’ll have to make it work. -
project is now stable – tried importing the titles previously exported before deleting. Added a couple titles to a sequence and things went south – C++ runtime error or some such thing.
Seems I will have to re-create my titles.
I am now thinking I will export an AVI of my edited program clean, then add the supers in a separate project.
Well, gotta catch an early flight so I’ll pick this up Tuesday.

Geeez…
I wonder if the project has a piece of media that is giving it fits? technically titles are media…but they’re embedded.
Does the timeline play head hit a certain area when it crashes? I might try to move that piece of media and see if the project runs with that clip -offline-?

Two additional things since my last post.
The importing of titles exported from earlier version of the project makes the project slightly less stable. I may end up re-creating the titles – only about 2 dozen – not the end of the world.
I had imported some Digital Juice jumpbacks, using Apple Animation codec, which retains alpha channels – those files once on a timeline really make things grind. Obviously importing AVI versions of the jumpbacks is the solution, however the animated lower thirds with alpha channel would have to be fudged with a static track matte rather than matched animated alpha. Oh well.Of course the project was totally unstable before the jumpbacks so that is a second issue.
As i have said , all other projects are quite stable. There must be a bad piece of media.
