I have an 8 TB RAID 5 array (16 SATA drives) for my video drive. My plan was to not delete any files until the drive was 75-80% full, and then delete the stuff I didn’t need all at once (probably 50% of the material). My idea was that this would help prevent fragmentation caused by frequent deletion.

So now I’m at that point. My question is – does it make sense to defragment a RAID5 array to increase performance after I delete the files? I know you should defrag single drives, but I’m not so sure about large RAID arrays.

Should I get special defrag software, or will the XP defrag work?

Windows see the array as a single logical drive, so no issue there.

I often defrag our RAID array (although I only have 8 disks), I can’t think that it makes a difference.

Does it improve performance that much? I honestly can’t tell you, that but I can tell you that the process will take a long, long time, especially with HD files.
