  MPEG problem with playback and render

  Hi!

  I ripped acouple of Scenes from a Dvd and converted them to mpg with MPEG_Streamclip.
  So far everythings fine, the clip plays back just fine in windows media player and winamp (lol) and the quality is great.
  But then when I import it into AE and try to play it, it jumps and skips like crazy when I scrub, ram preview and render. The audio is fine tho.
  I had a look at the comp settings to see if that had anything to do with it but that didnt seem to be the problem.
  I was really disapointed by this since I’ve spent the whole afternoon looking for a good program to rip Dvd’s with. I was very pleased with MPEG_Streamclip but as everything in my life something just has to go wrong at some point. :p

  Does this mean that I’m doomed? I’d rather not spend hours coverting all the Mpegs to someother format when it takes acouple of minutes to rip it to Mpeg.
  The clip in question is about 3 minutes long and 108mb’s big. 25Fp/s and Pal.

  But ok, lets say I really have to convert the files to make em work in AE. I don’t really wanna work with huge files but I still want to preserve the good quality. What would be a good substitute?

  Yepp, I think you should convert them. Use Quicktime with Animation or Microcosm CoDec. You might also get away with Photo JPEG, if you don’t intend to add extensive processing (color correction, re-compressing for DVD). I wouldn’t worry about disk space/ file size – these days you can get 200 gigs for little more than 100 Euros.

  Thanks for the help and suggestions!
  Do you know if Adobe is looking into this and getting it fixed anytime soon?
  I really hope so because personally I find converting a perfectly fine file (if winamp handles it so should AE) into another format is very time consuming and creatively it’s a huge turn off. I wanna work with the footage too you know, not spend hours converting files.
  That’s enough ranting for today. 😉
