Hey All, I just got a HP 8510w from my college and want to get an external drive for video editing. But it only has USB 2.0, 4-pin firewire and a PCMCIA card slot, no express card slot. Anyways, I was looking at getting an external RAID case but can’t decide what interface to use. I could get a eSATA PCMCIA card, but I’m not sure what kind of performance the PCMCIA port has. I’m thinking maybe firewire would be my best option? Any opinions?

I can’t tell you what you’ll get from an eSATA on PCMCIA (a vendor should be able to tell you). I do have one for an express slot and the performance is great, but keep in mind that these adapters have a pretty big foot print. If the slot is on the right side, and you happen to be right handed, it’s a real pain. The SATA cables being flat, it takes a good foot of space on the side where you would usually have a mouse…and arm.
