Importing raw-material that’s been captured with Final Cut
Hey
I’m working on a project with a collegue that uses Final Cut. He imported the material from a Sony FX1, and it’s in HDV 1080i50.
When I try to import the files to Premiere, i get an error. What should I do. Can I install some sort of third-party plugin?
Maybe you need to know some more about the files, and the encoder?

If you’re on a PC the only options are:
1. Recapture HDV
2. Get your friend to use Media Manager in FCP to recompress the footage into a PC friend codec like..Animation, PNG or ProRes – which you need to get the codec for from mac.com…blah blah blah (google it).
ProRes will allow you to work with the footage, but it will hit your CPU as its not natively supported.
I’d recapture in HDV using the EDL/s and a batch list of what’s offline for batch capture.
Sadly, HDV apple is only for apple. No PC love with this codec. You can see it if you have VLC on the PC, but can’t edit it.

The main issue here is that FCP uses QuickTime…that’s it at this point. everything coming in to FCP needs to be rewrapped as QuickTime.
You can have HDV/DVC ProHD/XDcam native compression, but the wrapper on the media in FCP is QT once it’s imported.
…and those codecs aren’t supported in QT on the PC platform.
Conversely, PPro CS3 in its latest version, supports MXF (DVC ProHD and XDcamHD) native and can actually write directly back to those devices… HDV is supported as MPEG on the timeline, but it does need to be recompressed for output.
