Sony DCR PC350E Capture in Adobe Prem. 7
Hello fellow Bovine!
I’ve got some footage on a Mini-DV tape which I’m wanting to play with in Adobe Premier Pro (v7.0). I’ve a Sony DCR PC350E connected via i.LINK but when I start up Adobe and select CAPTURE all I get is:
“Can’t activate recorder. Try resetting camera.”
I’ve reset the camera more times than I’ve been to the bathroom, but still no joy. I’ve sequentially worked through every Sony camera in the Device Type list (as my Sony ain’t there), and even tried plain ol’ generic, all to no avail. I’ve started the camera first, then started Premier first, still nothing new. I managed to get the tape to rewind by opening Windows Movie Maker, but even that choked when it came to actually capturing the footage. Is there some sort of driver I need to tell Windows XP (Prof) that I have this camera and I’d like it to be talking to all the associated software?
I’ve run out of ideas – anyone got something else I could try?

You need to eliminate either the camera or the PC as the culprit. Try your camera on another PC or another camera on your PC.

Thanks for the response. Neither is faulty I know that – I’ve used a friends camera happily with my Premier Pro before (can’t remember make/model) so that’s fine, and there is some communication between camera and software as Premier Pro recognises when camera is on by saying: Online or Offline as appropriate, but it just can’t get the link working to be able to control or capture through i.Link. As I say, I am assuming it is just drivers of some sort that I need to allow Premier Pro to know what the camera is saying and vice versa.

Device Control is mostly a Windows function that Premiere taps into. The fact that Movie Maker is having trouble indicates a possible operating system issue or hardware (camera, firewire cable, firewire card) problem.
Try this; in Device Manager, remove the firewire card, reboot and let Windows Reinstall the drivers. -

Apologies for huge delay, but wanted to get another camera to test for sure, and have only just done that.
Have now tried a Sony DCR-TRV950E with exactly the same result. The camera that did work for me about a year ago on this firewire card was a JVC from memory. Starting to wonder if it’s a Sony thing.
Tried uninstalling firewire card in device manager a couple of times, even moved the slot it was in on PC, to no avail. Still gets recognised there is a camera attached, can still get the thing to rewind triggered from software (Windows Movie Maker etc.) but keeps saying to reset camera or that there is some form of error – no futher info.
Getting slightly miffed at this point.
