I am shooting video on a standard DV camera that has a widescreen option I am using within the camera, It is 720 x 480 video but it adds the black bars.

In premiere my project is a 720 x 480 widescreen. Everything works great but I am having a problem with the levels filter which I use quite a bit.

The histogram shows up as almost nonexistant. By that I mean when you look at the histogram there is like no height to the curves. I think it may have something to do with the black bars that the camera adds.

I can still see results occuring when I move black/ white points and gamma, but it is really just guess work on my part.

Any suggestions, work arounds or recommendation on this?

    Thanks Carl

The histogram for a frame of SD video just does not represent very many pixels (345,600), unlike digital photos where many millions are represented. Further, if the distribution of pixels across the luminance scale is somewhat even…then there is little curves.
