Hi all.. I recently upgraded from 6.5 to CS3 and built a new machine (Quad Core 2.4 Ghz, with 4 Gig of ram, even though Vista only recognizes 2.5 or so after allocating the rest to match my video cards, and other stuff..)

I’m working on a project that will be about an hour and a half run-time. SD wide screen. Hardly any effects, just some nested timelines and a few dissolves.

When I went to do a test burn by exporting to Encore (a half hour segment) it looked like it was going to take a couple days (I did choose DVD High Quality…)

So, my question is, what kinds of times do other people get – I mean, this just can’t be right – can it?

Any suggestions from anyone on what to do to my system to get better performance? Should I go back to XP Pro?

Oh, running Vista SP1 recently installed. I did realize that I had QT 7.4 installed so I un-installed that without re-installing 7.3. When I am exporting I have nothing else running (not even anti-virus).

Thanks in advance for your experiences..

You will probably need Vista 64 to take advantage of all the memory, Also, check the BIOS and the “memory mapping” setting.

There is no way that it should take that long on either Vista or XP. Are you using noise reduction ?

With a Quad Core, you should be looking at near realtime encoding, meaning a half hour in your case.

Have you checked the core usage while exporting ?

You may take a hit if you have many images scaled down over 50%, but certainely not 2 days.

You can also let Vista do a Windows Experience Index Rating, under Control Panel > System, and see if it comes up with anything unusual. That machine should probably get 5 or above.

    Thanks Vince,
I may have tried the noise reduction – though I don’t need to – was just curious. And yes, my system got a 5.2 rating.. I’ll play around and see how not using the noise reduction works out though. Will report back with my findings.

Yes, NR is an absolute render killer, I wouldn’t even be surprised about the 2 days with it enabled.

That was it.. The first pass took 15 minutes while other stuff (minor) was running. In the middle of the second pass right now.

    Thanks Vince!

    Ok, it’s finished! Awesome stuff!

My last system did take about 2 days (without any sort of noise reduction!)
