Building a new system – Time to go 64 bit?
Hi everyone,
I’m currently in the process of building a new editing system and am wondering if it is worthwhile going to a 64 bit machine.
I currently use the CS3 Production Suite which I know is all 32bit apps. But I have heard several people state that they have their Adobe apps working fine in a 64 bit environment
Obviously I have several concerns:
1. Most importantly will the apps work okay?
2. If I run the Adobe Apps in a 64bit environment will they run better or worse.
3. How much RAM do I need considering 32bit systems only recognise 2GB of RAM?And finally, if I was to build a systems around a 32bit environment, what options do I have to move that system into a 64 bit environment? Essentially, can I build an productive 32bit system which I can upgrade to a 64bit?
Generally, my needs are for Premiere in particular, but I also use photoshop and after effects extensively.
Any thoughts would be appreciated.

I’d say go for 64 bits, and you can always install a 32bit OS if you run into some trouble. CS3 will run fine, you’ll need at least 4 Gigs of RAM. Some applications like C4D actually take advantage of 64 bits.

As much as I hate to tell you, even 64bits have been in the market for quite sometime now, you still will stumble into problems… especially support for software. The bottom line question is, are you willing to forgo some of your existing software and buy new ones, if there are new versions that support 64bits?
For me, I did install XP64bits, hardware wise, I am able to get everthing to work. Then, Norton System works fail, Norton Ghost 10 failed, ZoneAlarm does not work in my 64bits for some reasons, Partition Magic does not work…
If you don’t use these HDD related software, then, go for it.
