Using HD captures in Premiere Pro CS3
I apologize if this has been covered; I scoured the forums and didn’t find it. Also, thanks in advance to any and all who read this!
I’ve slowly but surely gotten the people I’m working with/for onboard with investing in decent creative tools, from getting the CS3 software (Windows) to now buying a respectable HD camcorder (Canon HV20). Here’s my problem: I SEEM to be able to capture HD in Adobe Premiere Pro CS3 (though the preview doesn’t work for me, but evidently that’s a problem for many), and seem to be able to export it fine as well. The problem comes in editing it: I can’t get the source monitor or playback monitor in PPro to show the video in its HD form while editing. Instead, I get what looks like a zoomed-in version of the footage, with mild choppiness when playing. This may be a settings-issue, but I’ve tweaked everything I know how to tweak, and still can’t get what I need.
Is anyone familiar with this situation and how to resolve it? I’m sorry I sound like an idiot; that’s what I am. Any insight at all will be much appreciated – thanks!

I’m not bright. Like, at all. My problem was simple: I hadn’t changed the default settings when first creating a new project. Problem solved, all is well. I’m sorry for wasting everyone’s time, but thanks for being here! I’m sure I’ll have a REAL problem at some point.

Ok, I’m not bright either…. I Just upgraded from PP1.5 and installed CS3 and I’m having the same problem. Magnified work space. I’ve checked all my settings, and I’m still scratching my head. It still plays in my preview workspace as magnified. I can reduce it w/the motion effect panel, Is this how CS3 works?
I even started over w/my project settings. What settings did you change?

Jack, the settings that needed to be changed (for me, anyhow) were the project settings that come up right when you create a new project. Start a new project, and you will see the options for changing the resolution, type of video (DV or HDV, etc.), and so forth. Unfortunately, this doesn’t resolve the issue of why PPro CS3 won’t show the video running in the capture window when you’re capping, but you SHOULD find that the preview window is running the HD videos in proper perspective if you set it up correctly?
Also, what sort of camera are you using? These are PPro plug-ins available for some cameras, that act as a project-setting present specifically for those cameras.

I did that. I changed the settings to HDV and not plain DV.
However, it still shows up about twice the size of the preview window. I can make it fit by using the Motion tool and scale it to approximately 46%, then it fits the window. Is that how its supposed to work? BTW, I use a Sony Z1 U. Just getting used to it. Great camJack T

Hey Jack,
I too have the z1, great camera. I use the HDV recording funciton all the time and have had success at bringing in the HDV capture in. I do find the camera output set to DV and HDV sometimes catches me as I tend to edit in DV from the captured HDV tape. You will need to be sure the HDV project settings are correct and the Camera is setup to output to HDV too. Hook up the camera with it off. Then start up PPro and setup the Project/open a previously made HDV project. Switch on the camera. Ignore the capture method choices popup window. Go back to PPro. Hit F5 to open the Capture window. Make sure the camera settings are set to HDV control. If you hit play it should be playing in 16×9 and you should be seeing it on the screen.
If this aint happening you should first reinstall PPro and if still not working right – contact adobe about the problem. You computer might be having hardware issues? I have had this camera about 9 months, its awesome and I’ve not have issues with PProCS3 on the PC with it. Hope it gets sorted for you in time for your deadline.

Thanks for the reply. I will try that. I just started using the Z1U a few weeks ago. Much Much different that my VX 2000, but from what I see, I love it. I look forward to working with this great cam. Its much different exporting HD or SD files than plain old AVI files. I think I’m going to do a 30 day lynda course. in PP and Encore. I hope that gets me up to speed.
