  • Garbage Matte – No invert option?

Posted by James Duffy on February 16, 2008 at 10:56 am

Hi all, my first time here.

I’m trying to make a small video where I shoot someones head off lol. I’ve made 2 clips, 1 just background other me shooting someone.

I’m trying to remove just the head with garbage matte but it only removes everything around it and leaves the head. There is a way where I have to choose the 16 point matte and move all the markers to the top and then remove from the top, but this leaves a cylinder pointing down towards the body, and its slightly noticable as the light is slightly different in the background shot.

I was hoping to use 4 point garbage matte and just remove head but there is no invert option to remove just the head, and it only removes everything but the head. Sooo annoying, and I know After effects has this invert option, I was hoping you guys know of a different way.

    Thanks.

Duplicate your layer. Apply a garbage matte to both the head on one layer, and another matte on the body only in the other layer.

Or Just fade between a normal video layer to a video layer with a garbage matte revealing only the body.

Eternity…don’t miss it for the world.

Nope, special effects are done in AE.

Thanks Randy, I worked it out in the end. I just put the background layer at the top and then just removed the head. Don’t know why I didn’t think of that in the first place lol.

Vincent, not everyone can afford AE & APP, and special effects can be done in APP, obviously not as good. But your reply was wrong, it CAN be done, I just did it 😛

    James,

Your quesion was whether there was an invert option in garbage matte, and my answer was indeed correct, “nope”.

It is true that almost everything can be done in about anything, and you could probably roto in Premiere with 300 layers of garbage matte, but the time you spend trying to figure all of these out in Premiere can buy you several copies of AE.

BTW, my answer was made at the same time as Randy’s, it wasn’t meant to discredit his, I just didn’t see it.

    Cheers,

    Vince

I’m not sure how it was in 2008, but here in 2021 AE doesn’t even have a garbage matte. Invert was such a useful option, why did they get rid of it, or did Adobe never have it? Ugh. I’m using the newest software I’ve ever had access to (CS6) and it does less in some regards than everything I’ve been using for decades.

How can I invert mattes now?

    Thanks,

    Rich
