Working with DVCPro
Sorry if this has been discussed before, but I couldn’t come up with specifics to some questions I have.
1. It is my understanding that Premiere CS3 still doesn’t work with DVCPro tape formats over firewire without some type of additional hardware like Matrox and the like, but it does work with P2 cards…is that right? Does that mean that even DVCPro25 doesn’t work over firewire, or is that the exception.
2. Because that was a limitation with CS2 for a guy I worked for had, he purchased an AJA Xena LHe card which allows capturing over SDI. But that doesn’t allow capturing in the DVCPro codec, does it? My options for capture are things like 8-bit 4:22, 10-bit 4:2:2, 8-bit 4:4:4, etc. Are those all just uncompressed formats?
3. I noticed when capturing to the card, it defaults to 10-bit 4:2:2. Is that overkill for DVCPro 50? Should the lowest setting (which seems to be 8-bit 4:2:2) be sufficient enough?
4. If those settings I choose from are uncompressed formats, am I capturing DVCPro50 material at a much higher file size than if Premiere allowed capturing to the DVCPro codec over firewire? The 10-bit file sizes seem enormous when I capture to it, but if 8-bit is okay to capture with, I’ll just switch to using that. Will the 8-bit file sizes also be much larger still than if capturing the DVCPro codec over firewire (if it were possible)?
Thanks in advance for any help I can get. I’ve been editing for a few years now, but pretty much exclusively in Avid at companies where everything’s already set up for me and I just captured how everyone else did. I never did wrap my head around codecs and all that, and now as I do side projects and just out of my quest for knowledge, I wondered if anyone could shed some light on these matters.
Thanks again.
