Offline/online editing with uncompressed/dv files
Hi,
I’m working on an animated film, and all my source files are uncompressed AVI on my harddisk. Is there a way to do offline/online editing with Premiere CS3 with files (not using tapes etc)? For example, I would have offline versions of the files in DV AVI format and then after the finished editing, I would swap them to UNCOMPRESSED AVI.

John – I have done this in the past a few times.
What I did was use Procoder to batch convert all the uncompressed files to MS DV and then did the off line. The batch convert created dv files while maintaining the original uncompressed files.
After the DV off line was complete I told premiere to unlink all the media and then relinked to the uncompressed files.
Just remember to set the DV file timecodes to the same as the uncompressed files if you need an accurate EDL.
The solution using Procoder is just one way but its the batch processing that takes the tedium away from it all.

I used to set a folder with the offline DV.avi files, then when I was done I’d close the NLE rename that folder something else and rename the folder with all the uncompressed.avi files the same as the other one was. Opening the NLE again kept looking in that ‘Folder’ and reconnected everything automatically. Way faster than unlinking and relinking file by file.

Interesting you should say that … in Premiere if you block select a whole bunch of off line clips and select relink, after selecting the first clip it asks for it will automatically relink ALL the offline clips required from that folder; thats ONE TICK for Adobe!
So if all your clips are in the one folder it will relink the lot in one click.
