mpg vs m1v
hey guys. i work for a church and i use premiere to chop of videos and edit them. we dont have the fast cpu so i use mpg for quick results and they work fine. For some reason of another, when i purchased a new laptop, i did the same things as from my previous work station to try and get the same results. BUT, on my new laptop when I export as an mpg, it always uses the extension .m1v and the laptop that I use to play back my media cant read that sort of file. Can anyone quickly explain to me why this would happen and whats the difference.. Thanks for your input.

m1v is mpeg 1 video only. there is no audio signal inside it. mepeg 1 is VCD quality, not very good. m2v is mpeg 2 DVD video quality without audio. Mpeg or mpg is a muxed video and audio file. It could be mpeg1 or mpeg2 depending on the coded properties. the mpg is a wrapper extension. How are you importing/capturing the video or exporting it? the m1v m2v mpeg mpg situation can be found and changed somewhere in this process.

Are we talking about Premiere Element here? Cause Pro does not edit MPEG very well and in general, MPEG is not designed for editing anyway.

I was talking about Pro. Obviously i am looking for the Best resolution and small file size. All my videos will be played on another CPU and not broadcast on TV or anything else.

The reason for my asking if it were pro was I have not encounter why editing in Pro will export as .m1v. But, in general, like previous poster said, m1v is the video portion of your VCD, thus in Pro, you need to export without Demux (i.e. .mpg extension. See multiplexer options and choose mpg1 or vcd.) Your other laptop should be able to view the .m1v video though if you change the extension back to mpg.Perry.
