    Is this right?

I have a 32-bit AVI that needs keying over some footage (well several instances of it ‘looped’ with a fade-in and out of each instance. If I turn off opacity effect it doesn’t need to render, but turning it on it does…I thought these simple kind of transitions were supported in RT with Premiere, or do I have to use an actual TRANSITION?

Also – I’ve had to add the ‘remove matte’ effect to get rid of the black around the alpha edges. I though PPro would read premultiplied files from AE natively..do I need to render them straight?

    Thanks for any advice.

    …Just to add..

I have waited 10 mins for my render..then when I put some video below the 32-bit ‘snow’ footage the render bar turns red again!?! Does PPro not render per-layer?

Finally (I’m trying to get as much done before the client turns up with the final graded footage to go under my snow) I tried exporting out a 32-bit AVI of the snow instances, to avoid rendering again later and it’s now taking another 15 mins to render it again for export..shouldn’t it be using the already rendered preview file to export?

Sorry if I sound like a spoilt brat, but this seems a ludicrous way of processing footage to me.

…And now my exported 32-bit file has been put back into a new timeline with NO effects and put footage underneath…17mins rendering needed!

Am I going about all this horribly wrong or something?

I am not sure why you keep rendering, but there is no reason to export a file. A separate sequence is just as easy if not easier. Render when you need to, not just for the heck of it.

If you need to fade in and out, you might find it faster to razor the ends off so that only the part of the clip that matters needs to be rendered. A single ended transition might be easier for you.

I am not sure why you have premultiplied with black in the first place. I export Quicktime Animation when I export files with Alpha channels from After Effects. Sure it is premultiplied but with no color below it (the background color of the comp does not count) there is nothing to premultiply with.

Premiere Pro does not render per layer, no. Only export to DV AVI uses preview files. That will not work with a 32 bit file.

In any case, I suggest fading in and out in AE not Premiere Pro. But there is nothing you can do to speed up keyed footage for render or export to my knowledge. There are hardware devices that help, but not software to my knowledge.

If you had a recent vintage (2007) PC, you would probably be a lot happier. The speed of a Quad Core (or two of them) processor speeds things up considerably.

    Hi Steven,

Thanks for info and apologies for rant earlier..it was one of those afternoons!

I know I need a faster system – I’ve been nagging my boss for months now. Hopefully a vague upgrade of a dual-core next week and something much better a little way down he line.

The premultiplied thing – I didn’t actively pre-mult it I just rendered RGB+A instead of straight. PPro didn’t seem to key out the black edges natively, so had to use remove matte effect. I just thought that if PP says it plays 32bit files in realtime it meant realtime OVER another layer, otherwise what’s the point in a 32-bit file!?

Anyway…will do some more tests tomorrow when I get time. Thanks for adivce.
