    Hi all,

Does anyone here use 4GB RAM on winXP PRo 32bit, with a Decklink card on Premiere? I’m jst trying to double check it will all play ball together.

    Thanks,
    Jim.

Works fine. Make certain to enable the /3gb switch in your boot ini. See microsoft support for how to do that.

Ouch…not too sure about 3GB switch..I’ve heard some horror stories. Do you need that enabled to make Decklink work properly w/4GB? I’m maxing the RAM so that Nucleo can use it all in After Effects and also for having several apps open at once.

What are your experiences with 3GB switch? Some says it works fine, others say it made their system really unstable..?

The only ones I’ve heard is people who don’t configure their systems correctly or have a ton of crap on their machines that have nothing to do with editing.

If I’m honest, my machine isn’t really an edit machine..I do mainly GFX/VFX and use PPro2 a tiny bit to capture/playout & encoding and a little bit of simple editing. I have quite a few diff apps on my machine for various GFX tasks, so not sure how well the switch would work. I do know that I could do with more RAM in After Effects, but I need internet/network and these other apps on the same machine aswell to keep my workflow fluid. Does it sound like 3GB/switch a bad idea then?

I want to eventually go XP64 and tonnes of RAM when I get my quad or octo-core machine for when we go HD, but I’m still hearing badness about that too! Vista is a pile of bile for pro apps aswell apparently – how do I get more memory with compromising stability!?

    Is mac a better option?

    Linux

Thanks for the suggestion Harm, but that doesn’t really help me with Adobe! Unless I want to switch to Eyeon Fusion, Shake or get a Flame (not an option!) plus all the other apps I mention don’t have a Linux option either..

Or were you just having a little dig at Windows in general!?

Your message ‘tonnes of RAM’ lead me to Linux, since Windows can not handle that. If you look at for instance the Supermicro X7DW3+ mobo, that has 16 memory slots for 64 GB memory, but only Linux supports that effectively. The consequence is that you may have to migrate to Autodesk Smoke 2007 extension 1 ($$$$) or forget about tonnes of RAM.

    Hi Harm,

Yeah – I see your point, but I don’t need quite that much RAM! 16-32GB for Apter Effects, etc really. Apparently Nucleo Pro plays best with 2-4GB per core and Boxx reckon x64 will be fine for that. Don’t know how much memory/procs Premiere can utilise?…But I guess it’d mean I’d need my main apps on the 64 machine and maybe network it with an XP32 machine for all my other cr@p!?!

We might be getting a Smoke on Linux as our main editor, but my machine would need to be on Windows or Mac for my Adobe apps. Are Adobe thinking of developing for Linux btw?
