.avi to .mov audio issues…advice?
Hi everybody,
I need to send in a .mov Quicktime version of a project I’m working on for a client that they can use with FCP. I’m using Premiere Pro 1.5. I’ve exported the movie as a high-res .avi file, and then used a program called Plato Video Converter to convert it to a .mov file. (I need it to be a high-res .mov file and i don’t know if I can do that with PP. If I can, that would be ideal.) When I play the .mov file, the audio sounds distorted…a bit tinny and metallic when the subject speaks. There are options for different codecs in the program and I’ve tried several of them so I’m not sure if that’s the problem.
In the past, I have encoded my project to a .wmv with Premiere Pro and then converted it to .mov without the problem mentioned above. Any thoughts?

If I were you, I would probably export as DV AVI and use Quicktime Pro to convert to Quicktime MOV using the Sorenson 3 codec.

I did what you suggested, thanks for the advice. The DV AVI filesize was 699 MB, and the resulting Quicktime MOV file with the Sorenson 3 codec was only 178 MB. I’m looking for the MOV to be about the same quality as the original AVI. Does converting DV AVI to Quicktime compress the video? I’m just curious because of the big difference in filesizes.

Usually if I want a .mov from within Ppro I use File->Export-> Movie, under General->file type I select Quicktime, under Video->Sorenson3, Proper frame size, frame rate, and pixel ration, 100% quality, no recompress, the resultant file will be larger than the original, if you want the same size use the “Limit Data Rate” and set to the MS DV Data rate.

If you got a smaller file, you exported incorrectly. Sorry, but you need to pick something with the same data rate.

Usually if you export via Movie(still WME) or WME, the Sorenson3 default data rate is 3.5 which will result in a larger file, so you can drop the rate down to 3.2 or 3.125 to get a size comp to DV, if you export to a DV.avi and then use QTpro you have to be very careful about the settings or you will get more compression than you want.
