DV Playback Delay
Hi
We have recently upgraded our edit machines from PP1.5 to 2.0.
We use a JVC DV deck to feed an analogue monitor via S-Video.
Since upgrading, there is a delay of 1-2 seconds between playback on the PC monitor and that viewed via DV out [with the DV lagging behind]. This did not occur before…
The machines have D820 CPUs, 1Gb RAM and 250Gb SATA drives for Premiere Data.
Where is the new latency comming from and is it possible to eliminate it?

Some delay is normal and that is why audio can only be played back either on the PC or DV but not both (they would be out of sync). Is there a problem?

We are an FE College and run eight of these systems. I’m an IT Manager, [not an expert on video production!] so please bear with me…
This issue only appeared after we upgraded from PP 1.5 to 2.0. The users had got used to looking at both the desktop and hardware monitors runing in sync and are now complaining.
I did see one other thread that implies an updated msdv.sys from XPSP2 might be responsible for the additional latency, but we’re not generally keen on back-reving components from service packs. It is possible that the old systems were running on SP1…
If this is expected behaviour, maybe the best solution would be to move to a dual monitor setup with an extended windows desktop?
How do the Pro’s do it?

The problem isn’t with SP2 or Ppro, when SP2 was released they updated the ieee1394 drivers, so that they fitted more closely to the ieee1394 standards. The SP1 drivers didn’t match these standards so closely. At the same time some cam/deck manufacturers had not followed the standards to rigorously either. This meant they would work together under SP1, but when MS altered the drivers to meet the ieee1394 standards, the cams/decks with the non-ieee1394 standard drivers no longer work properly, microsoft is working on the problem????? some people have had sucess using the SP1 drivers, there is plenty of info on the net about downloading the drivers and installing them.

Most Pros that I know preview video on its intended target…if for SD DVD, then on a NTSC monitor. Same for HD ATSC targets. Web, local playback and other devices are previewed on a PC monitor.
Audio Preview is similar, except many folks will preview audio on reference monitors via souncard AND maybe a typical TV with speakers if the target is a TV. If not then reference monitor via soundcard and typical PC speakers.
In Premiere you can choose which way the audio goes (Playback Settings)
