Finished project won’t open!
Yesterday I finished a project and even exported an avi file from it and the ai file works fine. This morning I wanted to open the project but it starts the “project loading” bar and when it gets to about the end of the bar, it just freezes and doesn’t open! Even the backup ones do the same! Other projects work fine. All the project was is a simple sequence with some pictures and effects.
I understand that there is no way someone can know what the problem is, but is there anyway to open Premiere Pro 2 in some kind of safe mode? Maybe that it doesn’t open complicated effects or something?
I tried to open a new project and Import the other one and this DOES import all the files, including the sequences, but when I put them in the timeline, they don’t play or show anything in the monitor windows.

If they all produce the same behavior, then you either have a corrupted source file, or a corrupted program. The first thing to try would be resetting the preferences, holding Ctrl+shift while starting Premiere.
If that doesn’t do it, I would try moving the folder where all your footage/clips reside to force Premiere into relinking the footage. That way you can isolate the bugger.

And could even be an issue with your preview/peak files, so deleting them might be another option.

I moved all the files but he still gets stuck on “loading” and doesn’t ask me anything. It’s so frustrating because I have all the media and redered files!! It seems that just the .prproj file is corrupt! Isn’t there any way to create a new project and have the Premiere “create” a working sequence based on the redered files I already have?

Did you move all the files separately from the project file? Did it ask you to relink the files? If the Auto-saved project are producing the same result, then it isn’t the project files themselves. Did you try resetting the preferences?
You could try creating a new project, then importing the project file.

Don’t know if this’ll help, but I had some problems with Title frames created in photoshop that were auto-resized by PPRO. Once I deleted them (or moved them to a different location temporarily) the problem cleared up. If PPRO does seem to be willing to look for them, make a dummy picture file with the same filename that’s much smaller and won’t have to be resized in the timeline.
Like I said….just something to try.

I have 4 automated backups. Each backup was created by PPRO at different times. The backups work fine but I had made so much changes since the forth backup that I am not going to do it again. (The files are the same in all of them).
I tried moving the source files, hoping that he’ll ask me to relink when opening, but that doesn’t happen. Like I said, it just gets stuck on “loading”. Because the backup files work fine, that is why I think it’s a problem with the project file itself.
I’m just lucky that this isn’t a project that a worked on for weeks… just a few hours. I am afraid to use PPRO now on big projects! I can’t have this happining on big projects and lose weeks of work!

By “Back-up” do you mean “Auto Save”, or your own back-up?
Really, I can’t see how all the Auto Save projects would become corrupted at once.
I honestly have not seen a corrupted project in the last 4 years (of course I’m holding tight on that big wooden desk of mine), and I work on this thing almost everyday, so it would be worth looking at what went wrong….

well, 3 of them are auto saved by the program. The 4th auto save I had replaced it with my final save by doing “save as” and saving the final project as auto save 4, so I should of had 2 project files of the same thing (my own manual backup) and 3 auto saved backups. The 3 auto saved ones work but like I said, I had done a lot of work after that so they don’t help me. The manual saves are the ones that don’t work. Thanks for the reply.

I had this problem too. Nearly finished didn’t open and crashed. Luckily, Premiere Pro project files are just long XML text documents. Download XML Wrench https://www.xmlwrench.com/ open your *.prproj file and “check well formed” from the tools menu. Chances are some filename or effect name got malformed. Just delete suspicious characters if this function finds anything. Don’t forget to save under another name.
I am almost positive this will help. It did it for me. Let me know if it does.

I had a similar problem recently when I upgraded computers from a Macbook Pro to a Mac Pro and then tried to open older projects from an external hard drive on the new system. The project that I was trying to open was a short 3 minute HD clip, but there was tons of HDV footage associated with it, layered on top of each other with lots of animations and renderings already complete. I had worked on this thing for almost half a year, teaching myself the program from A-Z, then set the project aside to work on something else only to come back to it tonight for the first time in months. But the project wouldn’t fully load. It kept getting stuck at 90% and then everything would just stop. The Activity Monitor showed no activity. I let it sit for 30 minutes. Still nothing.
After freaking out and trying various suggestions that didn’t work, I came back to this forum and saw the Vincent’s suggestion about moving the CAPTURED media folder to a new location on the external hard drive, forcing Premiere to ask where the files were. It’s a smart trick. And it worked! With a little tweaking.
Through this process I found that some of my rendered files were lost. I have no idea what happened to them, but as long as you are able to direct Premiere to the original media, you should be fine. You will have to re-render the entire project once it opens, but the work is not lost.
Now, here’s the trick I discovered: Once you finish pointing Premiere to all the media and available rendered mpegs, the project will load. But it may immediately crash the program, forcing you to start over. The trick is to USE YOUR SHORTCUT KEYS (COMMAND +S) TO SAVE THE PROJECT BEFORE THE PROGRAM CRASHES. The program may crash while saving, but as long as it starts to save, you should be fine.
Restart the program. Open the project. And there ya go! You should see the project as it was, only unrendered in the places where the render files were lost. Set it to render overnight and you’ll be back to where you left off next time you open the project.
