Premiere extremely slow import/export performance
I’m trying to compile some recorded webinars and am having some crazy performance results in Premiere. I’ve installed the trial version of Premiere Pro 2.0 and Premiere Elements, wanting to evaluate both before I buy. I’m testing using one 90 minute video file (wmv9 screen format, 1024×768, 54MB) and one audio file (mp3). I need to combine the two, trim, and export it for distribution on the web. Nothing fancy, no transitions, no titling.
First, importing the 54MB video file takes 15 minutes. Granted, it’s 90 minutes, but isn’t that a bit excessive?
Then, once I’ve edited and go to export, it takes a ridiculous amount of time. Exporting to WMV9 Screen at same as input settings (1024×768, 29.97fps) took 30 hours! It seems to be taking nearly 1-2 fps. I’ve tried numerous other settings, chopping it down to 6fps output and finishing in about 6 hours. I’ve also tried many other export formats and codecs, Quicktime/Sorenson3, Indeo, etc…with similar results. Also, have tried both ‘Export->Movie…’ and ‘Adobe Media Encoder’.
Trying the same using Windows Movie Maker, after trimming and adding the audio then exporting the exact same clip to WMV9 Screen took 20 minutes.
WHAT is Premiere doing that takes so long?? I thought it would simply use the same codec/encoder engine and should take approximately the same time, but obviously that’s not the case.
To note, I did try reducing the output resolution to 320×240 and it sped up quite a bit, but I need original resolution for readability.
System specs: Pentium D 2.8GHz, 2GB ram

Premiere Pro does not officially support editing WMV files. Can’t you get the original footage?
