editing .wmv’s in Premier Pro
Hi all-
Ive got a bunch of 320 x 240 .wmv clips that i would like to edit a bit and eventually piece together to form one continous .wmv video file. Im trying to do this and preserve as much clarity and picture quality that exists in the original clips. Id like to post them to the web and they look great the way they are but they just need to be joined. I do have Premier Pro and when i imported the clips and completed the necessary edits, I used the adobe encoder to export to .wmv. The only problem is that instead of exporting to a true 320×240 file size (same as original), premier seems to be using the black border around the video as seen in the monitor as the frame size parameters..thereby the actualy video itslef is quite a bit smaller than 320 x 240… It has a one inch black border around it that fulfills the 320 x 240 size requirements. How do i adjust the export settings to only encode the video and not all the black background as seen in the monitor?
I would also like to know if Premier is even the best way to do this kind of pieceing together and editing of .wmvs. Im not really sure if using the adobe encoder is the best way to export to .wmv and preserve the quality or if I should 1). use another program specifically designed for .wmv and 2). use another compression method in premier – like kicking to an .avi first and then compressing back to .wmv using sorenson or something? Any help is appreciated.

Recompressing any highly compressed file will result in a big hit to quality.
Windows Media Encoder 9 (free from MS) ships with a very crude File Editor utility which can trim a file and save as a new file without recompression.
There are a few apps that can join wmv files without recompression, such as Movie Joiner from Rejump.
