    I am currently working on a narrative feature length DVCAM project in PPr2. My question revolves around maintaining the highest image quality possible through the final render and I wanted to confirm with some of you experts whether I am utilizing the optimum workflow. All footage has been captured through firewire as DV footage. I have created a new preset for this project which is essentially the Adobe SD-SDI NTSC preset with some minor changes. I have changed the capture format to DV, selected max bit depth and unchecked recompress in the render settings. I then import the native DV footage into the timeline and do all my editing. My question is this:

    If I apply all my color corrections etc. to the DV footage in the SDI project and then export the video as an uncompressed AVI, then, when ready to assemble the whole project and burn to DVD/back to DVCAM etc., complete my final render in whatever codec is appropriate for the media will I be realizing the best image quality with this workflow. Or, is there something I am missing that someone can point out.

    A rather strange workflow IMO. You start out with DV material. Why a SD-SDI setting? You capture over fire wire 8 bits. Why try to make it 10? Why use maximum bit depth? You are just adding 2 zeros, not adding information that was not there in the first place. Then you want to export uncompressed, which uses large amounts of storage, but again does not add useful information to your material. The whole workflow looks unnecessary complicated to me.

    Why not simply keep it to DV and when ready for delivery render what needs to be rendered. Then you will have only one generation loss on the rendered parts and nowhere else.

    Thanks for taking the time to respond. I can’t capture to 10 bits because I don’t have an aja or other SD card simply a DV firewire capture card. The reason for working at 10 bit depth is that I have been told that while no video information is added to the image, processing at 10 bits yields less degradation of the image during processing because there is, for lack of a better phrase, more “digital overhead.” I know the same thing occurs in audio processing and working with 24 bit files in 32-bit float is pretty standard. It makes sense (sort of like higher precision in numbers when you carry out the calculations to the 10 decimal place as opposed to rounding to a whole number) to me but I may have been misinformed so anyone who can shed some light on this subject would be appreciated.

    As for exported to uncompressed AVI, yes, it does create large files, but because I am working at 10-bit depth I don’t want the file to be recompressed in the DV codec, exporting to an intermediate AVI with all the processing such as dissolves, color correction so forth the above advantages are recieved. Going straight to DV using the DV codec won’t allow me to apply the corrections in a 10 bit color space. As I said, I could be wrong on this as I am fairly new to the whole process and would love to hear other thoughts.
