    Hi to all.
I have a Canon XL1s and am able to Capture video footage from it useing cheaper editing software. However, when i try to Capture useing Premiere it reads,CAN`T ACTIVATE RECORDER-TRY RESETTING CAMERA.
With the help of Don Greening we believe the problem is probably with Premiere.
Any thoughts on said problem would be apprieciated.

I don’t know Don Greening, so I can’t vouch for his expertise, but it looks like a simple setup problem. Many, many people have captured material from an XL1 and haven’t experienced the problem you encounter now. It may be just a matter of having Windows recognize the camera through fire wire and after that open PremPro. If you connect the camera when your project is opened, it will not be recognized.

    Hi Mike.
    Thanks for the web address.
I have tried the various things mentioned but with no success so far.I am left with logging into the system as an administrator.
Could you tell me haw how i go about doing this as i have run out of ideas?
    Thanks again.

You are probably logged in as Administrator, but to check, go to Control Panel>User Accounts. Under the name of the account you are logged in as is the user type. If by chance it is not Computer Administrator then close Control Panel and go to Start> Log Off and then log in as Administrator.

By chance, what other software have you used to capture?

    Hi Mike.
You were right again.I am logged as the administrator.
Have spent the best part of today trying to sort out the problem, thanks to people like yourself.
I don`t seem to be any nearer the solution but am grateful for the help in getting to know the computer.
The software i was able to capture with were PowerProducer and Windows MoviePlayer.
On recommendation i deleted PowerProducer in case it interfered with Adobe.
I finally managed to download a complete version of Graphedit and did the checks recommended but again with no success.
    Thanks once again Mike.
    Have a great sunday.

I sent George over here from the Canon Forum because it sounded like a software thing rather than a camera problem. Since I’m not a Windows or a Premiere user I couldn’t advise George on the best troubleshooting path to follow. However, a few things stand out from his posts. He states that he can’t capture using Premiere but was able to do so from other lower priced NLEs. Does this mean that the capture issue is with Premiere rather than with the OS, since the firewire port seems to be active (according to George) with other NLE’s?

In the Canon Forum he asked about capture cards which leads me to believe that his Premiere setup may also be asking about them. Is there not a setup within Permiere to choose between capturing using firewire and a 3rd party PCI capture card?

    Just trying to understand.

    – Don
