Occasionally during the normal course of editing in 1.5, we lose the ability to playback video on the timeline. We do not get an error message or anything. We can open clips from the bin, but just not play a sequence. Need to reboot to get it working again.
Seems to happen when playing one clip in particular – could it be a corrupt piece of video? It has happened in multiple projects, so it seems odd we would have several corrupt video viles (AVI) but I guess anything is possible.

We are on a HP dual XEON machine, video is running off external USB hard drive, which causes no problems otherwise.

We reinstalled Premiere to no effect.

    Any thoughts?

Any virus scanner running in the background? When playback stops, bring up Task Manager and see if any process is hogging the CPU cycles.

Does the external drive go into “sleep mode” or some other resting state. I have one that does that and so is impossible to use for editing.

Try moving the offending clip to an internal hard drive location as a test.
