    Before you read this you should know:
    1. I want to have my finished transfer in HDcam SR 4:4:4 16bit uncompressed (or HDcam)
    2. I will be exporting my final render as a frame stack or QT (codec & architecture TBD?) fully uncompressed 16bit in Adobe After Effects 7.0 pro @ 1280x720p (24fps)

    I am trying to get my workflow all setup, but I have several questions:

    3. I am getting 16mm (4:3) footage telecined, but what format do I get it outputted to if I want to work at a 1280x720p timeline within Adobe Premier 2 pro? Do I go to targa or tiff framestacks? Or do I save myself the work and get uncompressed 10bit AVI’s? Basically, what format do I get it in so that I can edit my footage? I understand it will have pillar boxes because of it’s 4:3 aspect ratio, so should I get my footage uprezed so that I can crop it later and not lose resolution?

    I guess it depends on whether you want to reframe your 4×3 16mm in telecine or post. I would think the quality would be better if you did it in telecine (optical blowup), but since a 16×9 slice out of a 4×3 16mm frame is going to be a bit soft anyway, the difference in quality may not be a huge issue.

    In the case of doing the reframing in post, it would seem to make sense to transfer at 1080/24p to take advantage of the extra resolution over 720P, since you will be blowing up the image.

    Also, note that HDCAM doesn’t support 720P (although HDCAM SR does)

    As to TGA sequences vs. AVI clips, either should work, assuming you have an appropriate HD capture card. I would think the AVI files would be less unwieldy, and may render a bit faster. Also, can you do 10-bit TGA’s? If you have to go to 16-bit, the file sizes are going to be huge.

    Thank you for the response,
    The reason I need to go to 16 bit, is because AE can only export 8 or 16 bit, otherwise I need a Kona or Blackmagic card to export 10bit uncompressed. In terms of an HD card, I don’t have that, but it seems more and more likely that I will have to investigate a solution here. The amount of HD editing will be so minute that I don’t think an HD card is necessary for this project. It’s only 100 feet of film.

    FWIW- you don’t need the cards to export to those codecs- you can download and use
    the BM codecs from their website.
