Production Studio Nonsense
Slightly OT, but there isn’t a Production Studio Forum…
Just upgraded from Video Collection 2.5 Standard to Production Studio Premium, and discovered to my dismay that it appears that I have to have all the apps on a single computer….I operate with a 2 PC network and a workflow that usually involves DVD creation on machine #2, where I put Encore & Photoshop and continue editing on machine #1 with Prem & AE. The Video Collection had seperate serials for the apps allowing this with no problem….now it seems that with Production Studio Premium Adobe don’t think I should be authoring DVD’s on one machine while editing Video on another. I do a lot of long form projects and can’t see a sensible workflow using only one machine.
What am I supposed to do…maybe I’m missing something here, if anyone can help me out I’d be grateful.

You can have one serial activated on two machines maximum. This is meant to support a user with a system at the office and at home for instance, and I’m not sure that the same serial will launch (AE on one machine and Encore on another for instance) on two networked machines where they can see each other, but you could give it a shot…the second machine will activate.
If you move the software, it will also make your life easier if you can do it while the machine being de-installedis connected to the internet so the activation can be “given back” to the server…otherwise you may have to make a phone call and offer an explanation to clear and enable another activation.

Thanks Tim – if I get you right, then I should be able to install and activate the software on two machines simultaneously…with simultaneous operation of different component applications a possibility but not a definite subject to detection over a network….and if I disconnected the network then both seats should functionat the same time? At least if I don’t have to activate and deactivate every time I want to swap systems that would be something….still, seems to me that Abode have just struck another blow for the Crackers and Hackers (many of whom I have to compete with for business in the market place), who won’t be penalised with this sort of hassle like us license paying folks.
PS We meet at last…I am another poster formally known on the Cow as TimK, but one day The Cow disallowed my log in name so I adopted the nom-de-plume of my Video Business.

I am not too sure about that. I would reccomend calling Adobe Customer Service to clarify. Also, the Production Studio allows you to install certain components, so I would just install separate applications on separate machines (but just contact Customer Service to confirm).

Yes, I’ve just been wrangling with the same thing – not ordered it yet (Prod Studio Prem) but have been sending emails back and forth to Adobe and not exactly getting 100% consistant replies.
Basically, I’m wanting to upgrade to Prod Studio Prem on PC from AFX 5.5 Pro. However, we might be switching over to Macs in the next few months so I was checking with them about cross-platform switches and was informed I could do it at no extra cost (other than postage) but only ONCE, which is fair enough.
One thing I’ve just realised is that the Studio package (and half the apps within it) don’t exist for the mac!?! so what are they talking about? I’m concerned I’ll lose a bunch of stuff when the switch comes about.
As far as multiple machines goes – I didn’t realise you could split the apps over 2 PCs – I thought they all had the same serial no. or were all installed at once? This is another thing I was asking them but didn’t really get a reply on. That might solve the problem for us, as we also have a dedicated GFX station and then a separate MPEG editing & DVD station, so splitting the apps up (if legal?) would be a viable option for now.
If anyone gets a solid anwser to the ‘running the whole package simultaniously on 2 stations legally’ question, please let us know on here. That would definitely make me go for the purchase.
Didn’t Adobe used to have a multiple machines licence that you could buy for 1-5 machines, etc? Have they now scrapped it in favour of having to buy a whole new package for each seat?
And what’s all this about NEEDING dual procs, etc to even install Prod Studio? I’m a lowly single P4 user at the mo…am I screwed?

well, I’m running ProdStudioPremium on a single 3GHz P4 w/ 2GB RAM
w/o problems, at least for editing DV. So dual procs are definitely
not a ‘real’ must. But I’d guess you’ll appreciate them if going
HDV and/or beyond…Hope this helps
