  • Do I need to upgrade from PP7.0 to PP2?

Posted by Sharoney on August 7, 2006 at 4:18 pm

Hi. I’ve just purchased the Dell 9400 and am having no end of problems with my editing software. I expected it with Avid, but after getting that going I’m having no success at all with PP7.0, Procoder 1and Sonic DVDit!. It’s just an endless round of trying things that usually don’t work or lead to other problems. And I can’t even update 7.0 to 1.5 for free. Worse, there are often problems with the forums I hunt for answers! Especially that *#@! Canopus.

I’m currently a student, so I can get software much cheaper now than later. Unfortunately, that’s balanced by my current and extreme poverty. So, my questions are:

    1) Am I likely to get PP7.0 working if I keep at it? If so, is it worth it? I’ve read it’s not very good and it’s not supported at all.

    2) What is the chance if I do buy the Production Suite I’ll STILL have problems getting it all working? Although, at least it will be supported.

    3) If I got the Production Suite, is there any chance Procoder 1 will work? Or do I even need Procoder with the Suite?

    4) If I did stay with 7.0, are there any inexpensive authoring programs that will actually WORK? I’ve used ULead and Nero as well, also with many problems.

I’m feeling like a total idiot. Everyone comes to me with their computer problems and I was even offered $25/hour to work for a computer guy. I thought I was really good at this stuff, but I don’t have much hair left to tear out :-). Just like to know what you all think.

    System specs:
    Duo Core 2.16GHz
    2GB RAM
    100GB, 7200 HD
    GeForce GO 7900

Thanks for any help and just plain tolerating my rant . . .

Hi Sharon, I’ll try to answer question by question.

    >>1) Am I likely to get PP7.0 working if I keep at it? If so, is it worth it? I’ve read it’s not very good and it’s not supported at all.

A bit more info is needed here, such as, what “is not” working for you.

2.0 pro is a “HUGE” improvement from 7.0; from the quality of effects, speed, as well as usability, much better graphical interface.

    >>2) What is the chance if I do buy the Production Suite I’ll STILL have problems getting it all working? Although, at least it will be supported.

Again, it depends on the problems you are having; it “should” work out of the box as long as the manual has been read 😉

You may or may not need the production suite, but it sure is a great deal on cost if you do.

    3) If I got the Production Suite, is there any chance Procoder 1 will work? Or do I even need Procoder with the Suite?

Procoder is now somewhat in competition with Adobe. I did not get it to integrate with Premiere 2 export, and I have a feeling they probably are not in any hurry to fix that. Now, this function might work for others.

I don’t use it much anymore myself, but it depends on what you are planning on using it for. If you have the space, you can always export uncompressed and then import back into Procoder. I find that Premiere 2 Media encoder does a lot of what Procoder does, and sometimes faster. The difference in quality is an ongoing debate.

    4) If I did stay with 7.0, are there any inexpensive authoring programs that will actually WORK? I’ve used ULead and Nero as well, also with many problems.

Again, I would recommend the upgrade, especially if you get the production suite, as you will get Adobe Encore DVD (One of the best authoring programs around IMO.

To minimize problems with 7.0, or 2.0 I would only use this new computer as a production computer. I understand that you are a student and are not running a production facility, but one of the biggest cause of problems are unnecessary software running or simply installed on the same computer. (Ideally, you won’t even be online or running an antivirus.) BTW, Nero / Roxio’s third party DVD utilities are also on the list of problems.

    Good luck,

    Vince

Take the move to adobe production studio preminum, just today journeyed.com offered it for 600, now this is a bitof $$, but you get all the bundle, that works well together, same interface, just a nice product set, and will last for years.

bite the bullet, take on a bit of debt and get this, I think after about 100hrs, youll be happy w/ the whole package, it all works together.

Sorry to take so long here . . . Thanks for all this good info, I’m still absorbing it. Based on your post (and the one following) I went ahead and bought the Production Suite. Not only did I want the student discount while I can get it, but we had a tax-free weekend so it saved me a few more bucks.

Now, I’m trying to figure out/decide about dual booting, hoping I can keep my editing system pristine, but still be able to do all my other stuff, i.e. evil internet complications, without harm.

    Thanks, again,
    Sharon

Regarding your last post, a dual boot a really a good idea if you have only one system.

I would stay away from anything such as Antivirus, firewall, etc. while running the production suite. These are particularly hated by Encore, but will slow down Premiere and After Effects as well.

Glad to hear you took the production step, I’m sure you won’t regret it 😉
