color pass video tutorial
Aanarav’s video tutorial on using the color pass to achieve the black and white plus one color was great. One question though–when I tried it–didn’t really fill in the color fully (as it did in the roller coaster car example where the green is filled in completely on the car), and splotches of shades of the color appeared in other places (person’s face, etc). Any suggestions for how to get it clean?

Sometimes you need to mask off the area with a garbage matte in order to be able to apply the effect just to the area of interest – on a copy of the video. That allows you to increase the color range.

Oh, okay, that makes sense. I was thinking it needed some kind of indelicate mask that covered where you didn’t want the color, but didn’t have to be rotoscoped for movement. I’ve never used a garbage mask, how does that work?

Throw a clip on a sequence, apply a sixteen point garbage matte, pull in the edges with the nodes and play around a bit. With practice, you can almost make a reasonable circle.
