Need advice on how many DVDs for 4.5 hours of video
I’ve got a video that is 4.5 hours long. I need a bit of advice on how to break it up. It was shot on a miniDV camera (Sony DCR-PC110). I would like to record it at a rate that won’t show degradation over the years as I improve my TV and DVD player but don’t want to use more DVDs than necessary as it makes it more of a pain to store multiple DVDs together. I was originally thinking of putting just over an hour on each DVD thus requiring 4 DVDs. Is this too conservative? What factors do I need to consider when making this decision.
This question is important to me now for this video…but will also effect the way I create DVDs in the future.

When I read the heading of your post, my initial thoughts were indeed 4 DVD’s. That leaves you with very good quality, the cost of 4 DVD’s is peanuts and you can use a DVD case for 4 disk’s.

Just remember that once you decrease the quality from MiniDV to DVD, the loss can never be recovered. I would also make five MiniDV tapes of the footage as well.

I am planning on putting the file onto 4 DVDS. I’m not sure I understand your thoughts on putting the file on MiniDV as well though. The original is already on MiniDV and I keep that in a safety deposit box in a bank with a backup DVD of each DVD I make. So my plan is that if any of my DVDs get busted I can get the one from the bank and make a copy. If for some reason both DVDs were busted I’d just have to recreate the DVD from the original MiniDV.

What Steven was saying is, DVD has a lower quality than DV! and it is not meant for editing!! So, if you are keeping them as a personal viewing, that’s fine. If not, you want to keep them in DV (or miniDV in this case).

how many DVDs you take depends on their usage.
For your archive I would agree to use 4 DVDs but you said this decision will have influence on your further creations.
So let me tell you I also shot about 4.5 hours of film but this was an interactive movie I wanted to share with others. So here came another constraint to use very few DVDs for a better distribution. In the end I was able to put the film on 1 DVD(DL). To improve quality I used only half of the horizontal resolution which causes a slight blur on tv but reduces the artifacts of DVD compression because you have less picture to compress. I used 3500kbit/s and it was quite tolarable.
