  Dropped frames, jumpy transitions, project due soon :[

  Hey all, I’m having major difficulties with Premiere Pro 7.0. I’ve never used Premiere before and recently picked it up and it’s been a nightmare.

  I keep getting dropped frames, and my transitions are extremely jumpy. Is this because I used an AV-USB converter to get my HI-8 footage? No DV out on this old beast. I’m trying to figure out handles but every message i find tells me to just look at the Adobe manual for handles. That tells me nothing.

  I’m more used to using Imovie at my school, but I have done projects in Final Cut Pro with much more success than this (especially in regards to simple fades). Should I give up on Premiere and try something else? Maybe a little easier? I do want some versatility, but this project is due soon.

  The USB convertor is the problem. Premiere Pro does not support captures via a USB interface.

  I would strongly reccomend that you watch Steven’s tutorials on Lynda.com or even pick up a good book on Premiere. Also, you cannot apply transitions to clips as is. You need to trim down the head and tail of the clips and then apply transitions.

  I used ADS Tech’s “Instant DVD 2.0” converter to bring the HI8 videos in as mpgs. So I didn’t do any of my capturing in Premiere. I’m bringing the video into the source monitor, setting in and out points, and inserting it into the timeline. And I still have jumpy transitions!

  Like I said, project is due in a couple of days and I don’t have access to the Macs at school with Final Cut (which is a hell of a lot easier than premiere)…Anyone have any suggestions to alternate programs?

  1) Premiere Pro does not work with a highly compressed formats such as MPEG. I would reccomend converting your files to DV-AVI.
  2) Explained by problem # 1.

  There are a few apps that can convert MPEG files to DV-AVI. I personally reccomend DVD2AVI.
