Premiere vs Avid Xpress Pro
Has anyone compared Premiere with Avid XPress Pro? When you look at total bundles (at videoguys.com) the pricing is very close and Avid’s features and bundles (Sorenson Squeeze, Sonic DVD, Boris, etc.) seems to be much more feature rich than Premiere. I also understand that Avid is much faster than Premiere, with seamless integration between editing and creating the DVD…unlike Premiere/Encore. I am curious why some of you might have chosen Premiere over Avid Xpress Pro. I have not yet been able to get my hands on a trial version of Avid, hence the request. Thanks in advance for your input.

Pro 2.0 can do direct to DVD with almost complete control over menus/sub menus/chapters, etc..

if you look at the avid express pro forum at avid.com you’ll see that a lot of queries are about problems with going to DVD. I’ve been using avid for 10 years and am moving to PP2 not for editing superiority but exactly for projects which require “seamless” DVD’s from the timeline,impossible with Avid. the only way to burn a DVD from an avid timeline is to use a hardware dvd encoder or a standalone dvd recorder like philips which accepts a DV signal from a computer. avid is still great for editing and really great at media management compared to most other nle’s, especially premiere, which apparently has problems with large projects. avid has a learning curve but allows really fast editing once you know it. but for dvd’s you have to export from avid to an encoding program and then encode and then bring those files into an authoring program. PP2’s direct approach is WAY easier especially if you don’t need a menu.

.-DVD integration (and exporting to any movie in general) is, precisely, the weakest point in AVID.
It’s terrible.
And I’m talking about the newest AVID Xpro version (5.2.4).
You can’t even convert to MPEG-2 direct from AVID.
You can’t make an uncompressed AVI bigger than two (2) Gigs.
Premiere is SOOOOOOOO better at this…

————-Not sure where you got that. You can encode mpg2, and unless you are working on a FAT32 drive, you should be able to export to any file size.
Premiere does have issues with large projects, and I sometimes run into issues when I use too many High rez images.
I like premiere 2 for its DVD integration as mentioned, and heck I like the interface too…

Hoo Haw.. Some of us working on large projects have come close to slitting our wrists. In a related vein, Avid has very robust media management. PPro’s is rudimentary in comparison.

.- Any other NLE media management is rudimentary in comparison.
I never use Premiere unless:
1) The project is very short.
2) Need DVD.
