What are the proper export settings from a DV timeline to uncompressed AVI in PPro2? Do I select “Uncompressed Microsoft AVI” filetype with the “10-bit YUV” compressor or “Microsoft AVI” filetype with either the “UYVY 422 8bit” or “None” compressor?

Th AVI will be used in Sorenson Squeeze to create several web and computer playback formats. Are these other settings correct?

    – Millions of colors
    – PAR 0.9
    – Frame Size 720 x 480
    – Maximize Bit Depth on
    – Deinterlace on
    – Optimize Stills on

I’m not sure whether to set PAR to 1.0 and adjust the frame size accordingly?

    Any help is appreciated.

I did some more reading on this. It appears the “Uncompressed Microsoft AVI” codec relies on the AJA Xena HS capture card which I don’t have. I assume good old Microsoft AVI set to None is the correct choice? Should I change PAR to 1.0?

Just export DV AVI. Sorenson should recognize it just fine.

Thanks Steve, but it has to be uncompressed for my client. What settings do you suggest?

“Uncompressed Microsoft AVI” and PAR of .9 for 720 x 480. 8 bit if your source was DV, 10 bit if your source was exported from an app like After Effects or 3D Max.

Are you sure? I found this previous post by Tim Kurkoski saying to not use “Uncompressed Microsoft AVI” outside Production Studio apps because it won’t work.

I’m thinking “Microsoft AVI” set to “None” might be the right choice but I’m not sure what to do about the PAR and frame size issue for computer playback.

why dont you just export a Quicktime using the Animation codec. That is very high quality and will definitely work with Sorenson.

Hi Mark. As I stated earlier my client wants uncompressed AVI. Would I need to convert PAR and frame size with Quicktime?

Not necessarily. The nice thing about the Animation codec is that it takes just about any resolution at whatever settings you want. It just creates a fairly hefty file. Once in Sorenson you should be able to set the input parameters of the QT clip and export at will.

To be perfectly honest with you, if you’re starting with DV content I can’t see any benefit to exporting to 10-bit uncompressed AVI for further encoding. I know this can be a bit contentious with some people, but I feel you really aren’t gaining any extra quality by upsampling it.

Again, it’s what the client wants. Apparently uncompressed is what they need to integrate it with an AE comp for broadcast.
