I filmed a stage production in wide-screen on the Canon XL2. It’s my first for wide-screen projects. The DVD was built in Adobe Encore 1.0 and edited with Adobe Premiere Pro. When I produced the final product it appeared in wide-screen when played on my DVD and TV (both Sony) with black bars across the top and bottom. However, I am getting reports back that other DVD systems are interpreting the data differently. On some systems the picture it smashed and all the people look elongated with no black bars. On other systems there are still no bars and the people look normal but the right and left edges are cut off making key actors off the screen. How do I fix this?

If this is what I think it is, the people experiencing the problem have to fix it themselves. The setup in their DVD players is wrong. They probably have it set to “4:3 Pan and Scan” instead of “4:3 Letterbox”.

This is the reason that Blockbuster stocks regular and widescreen versions.
