I just got tapped to do a video for a fundraiser that is due in less than a week. It is all stills, which I have never done before (usually use video’s…). I want to do some panning and zooming to make this interesting. First question: how long should the total time be for each still when I import them – the total time being when it starts appearing on the screen to when it leaves? 7 seconds? Or will each be different? Second question: with motion will it look silly to also have “fun” transitions? Or should I stick to a basic one like Cross Dissolve? Third question: after putting everything on the timeline, I usually export to avi (lower field first for video) and then import into Encore to make a DVD. Should I do the same thing with these stills? Anything else I need to do with these stills! Thanks in advance for any help you can give me!!!!

Five to seven seconds is about right unless you do some slow pans that take a while longer. Fun transitions are fine for photo montages. You will want to do a lot of pushes and cross dissolves. Don’t get too fancy unless your audience is very young.

Besides panning, you might find that a very slight rotate is intersting. Start a few degrees to the left and move to the same amount to the right, then the next pic reverse the process. It should be subtle, but easy enough to notice after the first couple of times.
