Old Premiere 6.02 user – help me get going again please
Hi all,
Well it’s been a couple years since I’ve been here, and done any video editing. I just got a new PC for Xmas (XPS400) and want to get back in the swing of things here.I actually had bought the DV500 years ago – which used P6. I edited projects and exported them to VHS tapes via RCA jacks. Remember those old days 🙂
Now I have a MiniDV cam, a powerful new computer, and I’m ready to jump into the DVD era. I know P6 is kind of old – but I still have it. I’ve watched the Premiere Pro avi on Adobe’s website and it looks really really cool. But frankly, it’s overkill for me needs. I’ve also seen Premiere Elements on their website and wonder if that might be a fit. Does anyone here use that too? I’ve spent some time on the Pinnacle Studio user forum, and that product seems to have major stability issues. P6 was very stable for me.
My goal is very simple: Edit home video (5-30min videos), put some chapters in it, and burn to DVD. That’s it!
I have some questions below that I’m hoping you all can answer for me.
1. I remember one big problem with P6. The audio didn’t work during playback. This is a show stopper in my eyes. Is this fixed in 6.02?
2. Can I set up chapters & burn to DVD from P6, or do I need other software?
3. Does Premiere Elements sound like a fit for me? I’m nervous about learning a new product and wondered if the UI is basically the same. I am aware of the trail version, but wanted to get some feedback here first.
I appreciate ALL your input. The more the better.

Just to put things in context…we’re a very short time away from being 4 or 5 versions beyond Premiere v6…there was Premiere v6.5, Premiere Pro v1, v1.5, v1.5.1 and now the next release should make its appearance very soon.
…so many of the functional issues with Premiere 6 have been fixed or altered for several versions.
OK, so that said, I have both and I can say that I think Premiere Elements is indeed for you. It uses the same high quality DV codec that PPro does…it’s very quick on a fast machine…it has a nice title tool…AND it does DVDs with menus right out of the timeline.
Is it exactly like Premiere 6?…well not really. Let’s say you might recognize the family lineage, but you’ll still have to spend a little time learning it. It sounds like that might be the case with almost any software you decide on after having been away from it for awhile though, so I’m not sure I’d let that steer me too much.
It’s very stable on all of my systems.
It’s hard to go too far wrong for the price…bundled with Photoshop Elements, it’s a pretty impressive value.

Hi Jeff,
It seems like Premiere Elements would be a better choice for you. Why?
1. Because it is newer and probably handles footage/media better than Premiere 6.02
2. Has the capabilities of creating a DVD with chapters and menus.If you choose to stick with Premiere 6.02, you will have to purchase a DVD authoring software and is probably not worth to wait for the previews.

Thanks for the feedback Tim. I remember your name from a few years ago when I would post back then 🙂 Sounds like Elements is the way to go. Can you point me in the direction of some on-line tutorials (or websites)?

Yeah, I’ve been hanging around for a while…
I just Googled “Premiere Elements Tutorials” and it looks like there are a variety of ways to go…I usually try the no-cost websites first, then spend more money if I have to… 🙂
I don’t have any personal experience with any tutorials to make a suggestion…once you get the software and get on the Adobe forums (or the Premiere Elements forum here at the Cow), I bet a few users will have some thoughts to share…

I’ll chime in here to note that there is a fantastic community of Premiere Elements users at the Adobe User-to-User forums. Two of them (Chuck Engels and Steve Grisetti) even wrote a book on the program, and they answer almost every post at that forum.

This is all great info. I love the tutorial site. I remember a few of those for P6 long ago. Steve’s site had some if I remember correctly.
I’ll download Elements and give it a try.
