  Aspect or Pixel ratio problem

  I have imported several takes from a Canon MX2 camera into Adobe Premiere Pro, and after that edited everything. Now I have run into a really peculiar problem with the aspect ratio of the recordings. When I export the video to DVD as either 4:3 format or 16:9 format it doesnt turn out right. In 4:3 format it cuts off about 10 % of the right and left sides of the original video.

  I have also tried to crop the video to 16:9, but then I get the opposite problem, as the video now has black bars on right and left side, the video not reaching all the way across the screen horizontally. At all times the pixel ratio seems to be alright, as the picture is never stretched in any direction.

  As I see it my video camera is recording in a wider format than 4:3, and I would really like it to fit it on screen the entire with of the video (leaving black top and bottom bars in 4:3 format), rather than having the sides cropped. Can this be done?

  Note: GSpot tells me that the raw, imported video is 720×576 (1.25:1) [=5:4]. I have imported and exported it as PAL (1.067).

  Your video was shot with the camera set to wide screen or cinema mode resulting in fat pixels (1.25 PAR). You need to create a new project selecting “DV-PAL Widescreen 48 hz” project settings and try importing your existing project into the new project. Failing that you may need to start over with the correct project setting.

  Thank you for the help, it worked! A very obvious solution that I hadn’t thought about 🙂 So a brief summary of what I did, for anyone else encountering this problem:

  1) My camera has recorded my video in a 5:4 aspect ratio (As a result about 10 % on each side of the video is lost when exporting to DVD in 4:3 format)

  2) The solution is to make a new project and import the old, original one into it. After that use the motion effect to decrease the scale of the entire sequence (in my case downscale to 90 % of original size). In this way the entire video is transfered to DVD, the only ‘problem’ being a pair of small, black bars in the top and bottom of the picture – not really a big deal, and impossible to get around anyway without distorting the pixel ratio.
