Offline (LoRes) editing in Premiere
Anyone have any idea how to capture lo res footage for editing in premiere? I cannot for the life of me figure out how to capture in low res. I’ll be shooting on a DVX100a in 24PA mode, but I’ll be editing in premiere pro 1.5 on a laptop, so i need the low resolution version of the footage to put together a rough cut on location. Is this possible?
It’s not ideal, but it’s what I have.
Any help would be appreciated.

At this point, Premiere Pro does not support lo res captures. Considering the cost of external harddrives, may I suggest purchasing one?

unfortunately, buying an external drive is out of the question. No room for it in the budget. Believe me, that would have been ideal, but I’m already over budget.

Another alternative would be using the MPEG Pro plugin. Unfortunately, that will cost more than the external harddrive.

Chris asked me this question on the studentfilmmakers forum and he got a similar answer…apparently Chris didn’t believe me.
I was wondering if there might be a consumer product with an analog capture interface where the computer does some recompression to a small file. FW capture is a transfer and there isn’t any transcoding to be able to set for a lower resolution file.
Any thoughts on such a product anyone?

Well, he could use Windows Movie Maker. It can capture and edit WMVs. However, I don’t know how to upres the footage after that.

He also mentioned on the other forum that he was aiming to create an EDL for FCP finishing later. That’s where the prosumer stuff gets tricky.
