Well, I did a search of the archives and did find some download sites for ASIO driver updates for my crappy SoundBlaster Live-24bit External soundcard, namely the ASIO4All. While it did allow me to see all of the 5.1 speakers in Premiere’s Audio Hardware settings, I still only get stereo playback from my 5.1 created projects. The rear speakers don’t respond. The strange thing, as others have pointed out, my setup works perfectly with Audition 1.5. I can here all of the tracks in their respective speaker positions. Can anyone shed some light on why one Adobe product, Audtion, can playback 5.1 projects, and another, Premiere Pro 1.5, cannot? Is it a simple matter of my crappy $40 soundcard?

First off, Audition was not originally an Adobe product. Adobe bought CoolEdit Pro from Syntrillium a couple of years ago, renamed it Audition, and has changed relatively little in the program since.

Second, Audition is not an ASIO aware application. CoolEdit was born before the advent of ASIO, so it’s not even using the same drivers as Premiere Pro. The problem could be indeed with the ASIO drivers for your card.

Have you matched the channels to the appropriate speakers in Premiere Pro’s Audio Hardware prefs?

    How do I do that?

Edit > Preferences > Audio Hardware.

Make sure you’ve chosen the correct device from the drop-down at top. You should probably have a “Creative SoundBlaster” entry, or something similar that identifies the SoundBlaster’s ASIO drivers.

Then in the Mappings box, drag the 5.1 icons to the appropriate channels for the card. These may or may not be set up correctly already, and you may have to investigate with the card (or run some quick tests) to find out which channel is which. They’re not always clearly labeled.

Timothy, you are awesome man. I swear I read the manual three times on that issue but never remembered reading that I had to actually drag them around. In order to get the channels to play where I have the pucks placed in the Audio Mixer, I had to map those 5.1 icons in the Prefs…Audio Hardware to some odd positions, but it works. For example, I have nothing mapped to channel 4, but in the Audio Mixer my puck is in the rear right and it plays as it should now. Here are two picks of the Audio Hardware settings I had to choose as well as the puck positions in the Audio Mixer. Do you see any problems? It looks goofy, but it all plays back as it should now.

    Timothy,

One more thing. I just created a new 5.1 based Premiere project and when I try to drag and drop one of my MP3 based sound effects into track 1 it wants to force it into a new track. Any ideas? It doesn’t do this in a non-5.1 project. Thanks again.

Well, I’m sure I look a bit silly answering my own questions, but… I just realized that a 5.1 project in Premiere is looking for mono audio clips and I was trying to drop stereo clips into the timeline. I quick trip to Audition to convert them to mono cured that problem.
