    Hi there.

I’m trying to edit an existing AVI movie in Premiere Pro 1.5.

So far I’ve only ever used footage captured from my DVcam, and I’ve never had any problems editing that – this is the first time I’ve attempted to edit an existing source file, and I’ve hit a snag…

I can play my individual movie clips in the Source View pane of the Monitor, but when I try to play the sequence from the timeline, I just see black (no sound either).

I wondered if this might be a codec problem, or something, but then why would it work in one pane and not the other? Can anyone shed some light on this for me??

There are several popular codecs like Dvix and Xvid that Pro cannot edit. You could use VirtualDub to decompress or recompress into another format, like Indeo or Cinepak.

Darn… It’s Xvid that I’m using. Seems strange that it works in one part of Premiere, but not another though… Still, I can change the codec easily enough. Is one format (Indeo/Cinepak) better than the other?

Also, I’ve gone and pulled off clip instances from the original – if I replace it with the new codec version, will my instances survive?

    Appreciate the help.

Indeo 5.10 is the latest of the legacy codecs.
Not sure about your other question…do not understand.
