  Travel/Customs Advice – headin’ to Canada

  This may be outside the realm of Creative Cow – but not its members. I’m wondering if anyone has current knowledge of whether I have anything to worry about driving into Canada with some video gear? I’m flying to Vermont next week and driving up to the Montreal area for a day of shooting. Haven’t been to Canada since I was a kid – when you could drive across from Detroit to Windsor – no questions asked.

  There was an interesting thread on this in the Business & Marketing forum.

  Basically, with some exceptions, it’s best to drive up without gear and rent while there. Then you can just say you’ve been hired by a local Canadian company to shoot and that seemed easier.

  Definitely do NOT FedEx your gear across the border. That seemed to make sense if you’re flying in, but it’s a real nightmare getting that out of hock and back into the US without paying some sort of duty.

  I’ll try the thread – thanks. Really had no idea where to look. We’re renting lighting equip but will drive across carrying a small HD camera. Spoke with Canadian customs. Should be no problem with them. Will get some ownership documentation for bringing it back.
