    Recently I’ve been looking into a new graphics card. Mine cannot handle noise reduction, and often stumbles on magic mask. I’m not looking for cutting edge but something that has had time to mature has ample software support. Any ideas for what might be reasonable?

    Oddly my 2080 Ti has skyrocketed in value and I’m not sure why. Benchmarks do show it beating out many newer cards but bit shocked… Surely there’s something better suited than it for DaVinci Resolve?

    Backstory: I’ve long operated under the thought that software lags hardware design, after all it takes time for software developers to write code for new hardware. I built my editing machine on a shoestring budget with that in mind. Currently the graphic’s card is often pegged out during timeline playback. Especially with MagicMask and certainly with Noise Reduction. I’ve workflow workarounds (node caching, proxies, etc).

    Hey Matthew,

    Once you start tearing your PC apart for small gains, you run the risk that it won’t work when you put it back together again.

    Saying that, if you are in the lower end of the 4K spectrum, the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4060 Ti (16GB VRAM) looks interesting. It is a 2023 release v your current 2018 release version.
    But if you felt that the monitor migh be too expensive, once you start on upgrading your PC (or Mac), then you’ll quickly drain your bank accounts, or load up your credit cards.

    Instead, maybe spend some money on marketing and networking, and use that to get more customers, at a higher fee.

    Not too worried about breaking the PC as I built it. More concerned about breaking the budget. So the 4060 is a better version of the 2080? I couldn’t figure that out as some benchmarks were putting it at par with the 2080 Ti (totally confusing).

    In researching I couldn’t find much info on what can better handle noise reduction, which grinds my timeline playback down to a few frames per second.

    Yes, in my opinion the “4060 is a better version of the 2080”.

    Keep in mind that they are not top of the range cards, but sitting somewhere between gaming and video editing.

    Not taking your other PC specs into account, here is what Google A.I. on search suggested about the 5060:

  • The AI Factor: DaVinci Resolve’s Neural Engine and heavy Temporal/Spatial Noise Reduction operations are heavily dependent on GPU Tensor Cores. The Blackwell architecture in the 50-series provides massive AI processing power that speeds up these tasks significantly compared to older generations.
  • VRAM Advantage: Denoising at 4K resolutions requires enormous VRAM. The 16GB of GDDR7 memory allows you to enable GPU timeline preview generation and stack multiple nodes without maxing out the card and causing it to drop frames or crash.
  • Setting all of the above aside, why are you having to “better handle noise reduction”!?

    It suggest that your footage is not at the optimal picture quality?
    Which is normal, but not neccesarily “helpful” when want to optimize for 4K/UHD/HDR.

    I use Topas Video for all of my denoising footage.
    With Topaz, I run a seperate pass on the footage for denoise, and as it is not realtime, I build it into my workflow.

    Thanks, I think part of what confuses me is I have the Nvidia brand 2080 Ti w/ 11GB memory. They are going for as little as $550 on eBay and upwards of $1000. I’m not really sure why… If indeed the newer cards are faster, many are less than $500 and most less than $1000 (until it’s the latest stuff).

    The card I have is “good enough” for what I’m doing outside of those two nodes (noise and magic mask). I’m wondering though if I shouldn’t sell this thing and get a newer card or risk it being slower in resolve.

    I’m also told by another editor that the 2080 Ti predates some stuff Nvidia did to the chipsets (not exactly sure what that stuff is). According to what he’s telling me the newer cards he tells me are somewhat handicapped as a result? I cannot find specifics on this though and very few benchmarks run inside of DaVinci itself to validate these claims.

    I noticed something fiddling around here. Resolve doesn’t work well when I plug in the new 3rd monitor. I unplugged it as well as my scopes monitor. Then it runs MUCH faster. I think really what I need is a good enough graphics card to run all my displays then leave the 2080 Ti for Resolve exclusively.
