27″ iMac?
Hey guys! I tried searching for this topic on here, but found my post from about a year ago as the most recent. Has anyone heard any legit rumblings about a new 27″ iMac (or larger) being released anytime soon? I’ve searched around but can’t find anything solid. I’m debating buying an inexpensive loaded 2020 27″ iMac to tide me over for a couple years while I wait.
Not a perfect plan but maybe the best one for me. My 2013 iMac just gave me the blue screen, so seeing if it’s salvageable for now or if I should move on. I tried a mac mini and didn’t care for the organizational mess on my desk and it was buggy so I returned it. Thanks for any thoughts!

Well, I waited for that one for some time, then had to buy a MacBook Pro. And very happy. I use my old iMac(2014) as a second screen sometimes.

There’s rumors, but nothing solid, no one knows anything. I had an iMac Pro go bad and got an M1 Pro Max MBP (2021) with a cheap (but surprisingly nice quality) ViewSonic UHD monitor. I have way more power than I had before. I stopped waiting for what I wanted. I had to get what I needed. And I’m really glad I did. Don’t hold out for some pie-in-the-sky iMac that may never come.

Thank you both for your replies! Yeah, I agree with you both. Seems pointless to wait longer. I think I’m gonna get a 2020 27″ iMac and see if I get 2-3 years out of it. Seems like it should work with the newest version of fcpx for the moment.

It will certainly work, though the Intel Macs have received their last major OS upgrade. Maintenance updates will continue for a couple of years. You won’t get any of the new Apple Intelligence features (in-app transcription), or the silence of the newer M series Macs.
I was also waiting for a 27″+ iMac. Just sold my maxed 2019 and upgraded to a gently used Studio Ultra w/studio display. The M4 Minis are unbelievable value, and I would’ve gone that route had I not stumbled upon the Ultra. Just couldn’t wait any more.

Thanks for your thoughts! I know it’s definitely a stop gap. Just trying to decide what price point makes sense for the limited time it’ll be super viable. I’m about to dig around and find the best bet. Looks like they’re in the 800-1500 range.

Assuming I pull the trigger on a temporary 2020 iMac, how vital is it to get an i9 version versus i7? Thanks!!

That depends entirely on what you need to get done, though I will say for a stopgap upgrade from a 2013, I’d guess an i7 would suffice.
The bigger issue is storage. I’d recommend a decent-sized NVMe stick in a Thunderbolt 4 enclosure, formatted APFS. My current portable is a 4TB Samsung 990 Pro in an ACASIS enclosure, and it just plain rips. For in-office work I’m running an 8 bay SSD RAID.
I/O will have more effect on your day-to-day than i7 vs i9, and a fast SSD in a TB4 case will translate nicely to the newer hardware when you move to Apple Silicon.

Thanks for the info! I normally edit anything from 30 second promos to 2 hour features so it’s typically in use. 4k with proxies in fcpx, using an external drive.

I edit 4K video daily and never have need for proxies. Any Mac these days should handled editing 4K easily without the need for proxies.
