    Hello,

Forgive the beginner question, but is C4D-Lite based on the full Cinema 4D? ….. Or is it at least similar?

I’ve got several years of editing and motion graphics (a little 2.5D & VFX). I’ve mostly used Premier, After Effects, and Avid. I’d like to add some 3D to my skills. I’m guessing a lot of it will be creating/modeling 3D elements, then bringing those elements into AE (unless I determine a better workflow).

For 3D I’ve read a little about C4D and Blender.

I’m asking about C4D-LITE to see if that is a good intro to the full C4D? In other words, if I get comfortable using C4D-Lite, will the full C4D feel like an expanded version of that? (my C4D-Lite skills will transfer)? …….. OR …….. will it be like learning a whole new program?

I ask because the full C4D is pricey. I can probably get my biggest client to pay for it….. But, I’d like to have some skills with it so if they shell out the subscription $ they can see some modest results sooner. That’s why I’m wondering if learning C4D-Lite first (free in AE) will help me hit the ground running in the full C4D.

I know Blender is free. But, I’ve read it has a steeper learning curve and is not as user-friendly.

So that’s my question: Is starting with C4D-Lite a good way to learn the full C4D? ….. OR, is it very different?

    Hi Rory,

Certainly, beginning with C4D Lite will save you time and effort in learning the basics of the program and getting to know the interface and how the tools, tags, and effectors work. So when you have the opportunity to move to the full version, you will continue what you started learning on Lite, you will not need to go back. It is the same program, but without the tools through which you can do complex work in terms of modeling and animation, and with limited rendering quality. However, you can complete simple projects on it. Below is a picture and a link from the Maxon website explaining the two versions’ most important differences. I hope this is helpful to you.
