Hey guys, been using AE for over 15 years. I’m running into a very wierd issue where AE 2023 keeps crashing on startup of any of my projects. AE 2022 is working, and I can still open AE 2023 and work on a few things but it always crashes eventually. I have tried EVERYTHING I can possibly think of to fix this including:

    • Purging memory and disk cache
    • disable GPU acceleration
    • start in safe mode
    • deleting all AE data in appdata folders
    • delete all plugins and preferences
    • reinstall after effects
    • reinstalled and upgraded to windows 11
    • updated GPU drivers, and then rolled back to an earlier stable version too

No idea what else to do. Any tips?

Its kinda what happened to my Sony Vegas Pro 20 that it sometimes crashes out of nowhere and it does not tell you what file is causing this. Since you tried most of the things and still does not work, have you tried checking how much processes and Memory it consumes when running AE 2023 in Task Manager? And depends what else is running in the background while AE 2023 is opened. I am figuring out this same issue with my latest Sony Vegas so I know the feeling.

Here is also a search list of videos that you can check out that may help you with the crashing issues too: https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=after+effects+2023+crashing

Is it by any chance when you switch Windows to something like File Explorer? There’s a setting for importing media using your GPU that clashes with Windows. Preferences > Preview > and uncheck Hardware Accelerated Decoding resolved the issue for me.
