I’ve hunted the Internet and the Adobe forums with no luck. My company has a hybrid work setup, so part of the week we’re home, part in the office. We have Creative Cloud Enterprise. We use SharePoint as a storehouse for projects and assets. We run MacBook Pros and a couple Mac Minis, all using Ventura. Our AE is 2020 (can’t be updated, long story) while PS and AI are 2023. Everything works fine… except Libraries in AE.

I’ve found multiple times that assets added to an AE project from a Library at home are missing in the office. At the office, I can’t add anything to AE from a Library. Just learned today some people experience this behavior at home as well. While the shared Libraries are organized in Groups, AE does not display the groups, lumping everything under a Graphics header. PS and AI display grouping correctly

I THINK the problem has something to do with folder permissions. If I Get Info on Documents/Adobe and Adobe/After Effects 2020 folder, the Group category just says “fetching” and spins constantly. Other users display a Group, but it’s a different Group than I had after booting in Safe Mode. When AE refuses to add an asset at work, the file path just reads <missing>. If I open a project from home, the missing asset seems to be looking for the User Libraries folder on my home machine. So I’m thinking AE isn’t able to trace the asset to the Library and write a copy to the User Libraries folder. Or something.

So I was wondering if anyone else had this problem and had found a fix? None of my hunting so far has turned up any solutions. Worth noting we do not have Admin access so my troubleshooting options are limited and our IT team isn’t what you’d call Mac-savvy.

As you suspected, having the wrong folder permissions could make it difficult to access and sync assets over different locations. Make sure that the Adobe 2020 documents folder has the proper read and write permissions for all users who require access by checking the folder permissions. Please make sure that Creative Cloud Sync is turned on and active across all of your devices. This can help maintaining Libraries synchronised between multiple machines.

Also, reset the After Effects preferences. Sometimes, corrupt preferences lead to errors with Adobe software. You can attempt to restore After Effects’ preferences to their original state. To do this, start After Effects while holding down the Shift + Option (Mac) keys. If you want to erase the preferences, a dialogue box should prompt you before doing so, verify to see if it fixes the library problems.

Unexpected behaviours or missing assets can be fixed by clearing the cache in After Effects. To remove the cache and see if it helps, go to Edit, Purge, All Memory & Disc Cache.

You mentioned that you couldn’t update your After Effects version. When using Libraries, there are complications because different Adobe programme versions are incompatible.
