My first time here, I’m looking to automate the animation of 100+ layers (these are ellipses in a half tone pattern) in a more sophisticated way than doing them individually. Apologies if this has already been discussed.

I think the best way to tackle this problem is to use a third-party plugin like Trapcode Form; this allows you to build a grid of particles and control their properties with the color values of other layers. For example, you can link the scale of the dots in your pattern to the color of a gradient on a separate layer, then animate the gradient to drive the dots.

The built-in effect Card Dance can do some of this natively, but Form is always my go-to solution for the problem you’re facing.

Thanks Walter, I’m not sure that particles are what I’m looking for as I have the dots in 100 layers, I thought I might try using Falloff in the Motion plugin to animate these layers in.

    That’ll work great, too!

I just advise Form because it’s generally faster than manipulating hundreds of layers with expressions. You can use custom particles, so it doesn’t have to just be twinkling stars or magic dust.
