50fps footage in a 25fps timeline
I am an editing professor in an Indian film institute.
Our students shot some footage on Sony FS7 during a Cinematography Workshop.
But by mistake they shot it at 50fps.
We thought that footage would play in slow motion on a 25fps timeline in Adobe Premiere Pro.
But strangely it’s playing in Normal Motion on a 25fps timeline.
In fact our guest faculty ( Cinematographer ) said that he shot a Web Series at 50fps for better image quality and they edited it on a 25fps timeline without any issue.
One of the students said that if we interpret the footage in Adobe Premiere Pro then it’ll play in slow motion.
My questions are…

How come Adobe is playing 50fps footage on a 25fps timeline in Normal Motion ( Is not it supposed to play in slow motion? )?

If we shoot something at 100fps ( or any other fps ), will it still play in Normal Motion on a 25fps timeline?

Should we edit the 50fps footage in a 25fps timeline or should we use a 50fps timeline ( for editing in normal motion )?
It’ll be really helpful for me and my students if someone could please clear our confusion regarding this.

Premiere will not automatically change the speed without user interpretation. If you edit 50 fps footage in a 25fps timeline Premiere will only play every other frame. If you would edit 25 fps footage in a 50 fps timeline it would show every frame twice. 100 fps footage would show every fourth frame in a 25 fps sequence.
When you interpret footage you are setting the clip to run at a different speed so the duration and audio will change.

When you shoot at any framerate, the camera adds metadata for that framerate. That’s how the NLE knows what the “correct” framerate is. Since you shot at 50fps, the camera has set the video metadata to 50fps. Premiere sees that data and adjusts the clip playback in the timeline so that it runs properly against real time, as Tero has described.
If you want something to run at half-speed, you can either change the clip speed in the timeline (Speed/Duration or Time Remapping), or you can tell Premiere to change the assumed clip framerate using “Modify>Interpret Footage.” Interpret changes the clip itself and must be changed prior to putting it in the timeline.
