I work in an animation department that uses Blender and After Effects for rendering. We also have Render Garden. Even with Render Garden, some team computers really struggle to function while something is rendering. My department doesn’t have the budget to upgrade our entire team’s computers, so we are looking to get one powerful computer to function solely for the team’s rendering tasks.

I’m looking for any recommendations for what type of computer would work best for solely rendering 2D and 3D animations. It would be difficult for me to get my company to order different parts, so I’m looking to make just one whole purchase. Thanks for any advice!

I love my HP Z-series workstations. We have several of them, they’re beautifully engineered, and the service and support options are top-notch. On the downside, they are pretty pricey.

You might consider talking with Puget Systems. I have one of those as my daily driver. A sales engineer will work with you to understand your requirements and recommend and build a machine for your specific needs. They have done some incredible R&D around After Effects performance and benchmarking, and they have some specific recommendations for Blender, too.

Lastly, if you don’t already have shared storage, you probably want one. Bob Zelin (who’s very active here on the COW) recommended and remotely configured a QNAP system for us.

My render farm days are long gone (Max/Maya).

Walter is on the nose with the HP Zs 🙂

Before that, we had BOXX, Intergraph, and SGI Onyx/Visual.

I still have an older HP Z240 for Maya and it’s solid.
