Magic Bullet Looks in AE / Rosetta not applying to layer.
Posted by Francois Driessen on May 2, 2022 at 2:30 pmWondering if anyone else can help me troubleshoot this one:
Magic Bullet Looks UI and everything else seem to operate fine in AE loaded through Rosetta on M1. However the look is not applied to the layer once done.I’ve reached out to Red Giant via the Black Hole of Maxon. But as expected from black holes, nothing else came back so far from the support team through that channel.
Any ideas? Or any other ways I could reach the RedGiant team more effectively that you know of?
Thanks.

May 2, 2022 at 7:01 pmWhat version of Magic Bullet Looks are you using? The latest update works on M1 natively without needing to go through Rosetta.

May 3, 2022 at 11:30 amI have given up on Red Giant / Maxon after they’ve killed off download feature of old Red Giant versions for existing customers from their website, and at the same time made it impossible to get a price on the Maxon website for upgrading a perpetual licence.
Their “new” on-line sales model is in a mess, and as a loyal customer you have to “apply” to the local sales office in writing to get a price for upgrading.
Rather than pushing it, I’ve migrated out. Should Maxon come to their senses, I might look again. But the longer they leave it, the more I get used to using other vfx plug-ins for particles and anything else.
If Red Giant is not getting back to you, I would head over to the Maxon Cinema 4D forum and post the question there. I’m sure that they’ll be able to help you.

May 3, 2022 at 2:49 pmI’m using the latest version.
But unfortunately I have to load AE through Rosetta – since I’m using Optical Flares from VCP which is not M1 native yet.

May 3, 2022 at 3:50 pmUgh. Yes. I year you.
I believe you can get perpetual licenses for upgrades…?
But I’m with you. It took a lot of patience and humility to be forced through the conversion to the Maxon infrastructure. Not the type of thing any company should be expecting from a customer…
Once I added all my licenses into the Maxon system I can download legacy installers.
Also, special pricing as a loyal customer was a joke. But once I admitted my fate, I went back and accepted the discount offered to the full annual subscription. If you don’t need the full kit INCLUDING C4D you’re hosed. But if that is part of the equation of what you’d be spending money on anyway it comes out reasonable.
I guess the idea that you own anything is crumbling. We all just rent. I sure don’t like it at all from the customer pov.

May 3, 2022 at 4:47 pmMaxon and Red Giant sales are broken, and they don’t seem interested in fixing it.
Just did this little capture to illustrate the problem of UX failures in their “automated” sales process:
https://youtu.be/nLvgMegp5EsIt is interesting how they move you from:
“Single-User Perpetual License”to
“Want to upgrade your perpetual license instead? Contact our sales team or your local reseller.“Straight to
“TEAMS LICENSING PROGRAM”
Ending up at
SALES INQUIRIES
Where you can fill in a form. And, when you have done that, you get a “What do you want?” email back, although you have already specified what it is that you want – that is what happened to me.
I agree on the point that many companies are migrating to SaaS.
Adobe has been one of the most successful in doing so.But when it comes to “nice to have”, like all other subscription services, my Red Giant Trapcode suite has been dropped to the bottom of the list.
Mainly because Maxon is suggesting that you do have a choice, whilst making it unnecessarily difficult to buy an perpetual upgrade. As said, I’ll keep watching what Maxon does. But whilst doing so, I am active on getting better with BorisFX and Blender. Eventually I will not miss Maxon and it will not even be on my “nice-to-have” list, which is a bit sad.

May 5, 2022 at 4:52 amOh, yikes. I’ve heard pretty nice things from some folks about running the M1-native version of AE. Too bad you’re missing out on that.
If you’ve got Red Giant Complete, then you have Real Lens Flares which works nicely on M1. It’s the brand new tool that actually simulates light going through a lens profile for more realistic flares. It’s a bit slower to render, but that’s not surprising considering it’s actually doing raycasting!
